Cooking filet mignon is way easier than you think.no need for the slow cooker, as the air fryer can get your filet mignon cooked in minutes.

You can use a grilling pan, or frying pan or decide to broil them. The truth is that filet mignon tastes better when cooked with medium-rare to medium heat.

How to Choose a Filet Mignon Cut?

When picking your fillet mignon steak, go for those with even edges, and are about one to two inches thick. But if you want a fillet mignon with a juicy result, go for one to one and a half inches thick.

How to Grill Filet Mignon?

You can grill fillet the direct and indirect ways. For direct grilling, the fillet should be covered over medium heat. After grilling for some certain time, turn the steak to the other side to cook.

Here is the following timing to go by when grilling fillet mignon.

  • For a 1-inch cut, grill for ten to twelve minutes for medium-rare at 145°F or twelve to fifteen minutes for medium at 160°F.
  • For a one and a half cut, grill for fifteen to nineteen minutes for medium-rare at 145°F or at 160 degrees F for 18 to 23 minutes.
  • After cooking, transfer the meat to a platter and cover it with foil. Allow to sit for five minutes before serving.
  • For indirect grilling, grill the fillet mignon covered with a drip pan over indirect medium heat. The required time depends on the steak thickness and desired doneness.
  • For a one inch cut, grill on medium-rare for 16 to 20 minutes at 145°F or 20 to 24 minutes for medium at 160°F.
  • For one and a half inch cut, grill for  22 to 25 minutes at 145°F for medium-rare or 25 to 28 minutes for 160 degrees F at medium.

Do not turn meat grilled indirectly as the air circulates around the steak like in an oven.

How to Cook Filet Mignon in a Skillet?

When cooking fillet mignon in a skillet, choose one that the meat should fit snugly in one layer. If you get a skillet that’s too large, the pan juice will burn. On the other hand, if the pan is too small, the meat may steam instead of brown.

  • A cast iron skillet is better and you can cook the steak on your stovetop.
  • Start by measuring the fillet mignon thickness, then pat it dry using a paper towel.
  • After that, spray the skillet with some non-stick spray if you don’t have a non-stick skillet.
  • Preheat the skillet on medium to high heat until it’s very hot. Place the meat and cover the skillet. Do not add any other liquid to it.
  • Then, reduce the heat to medium and cook medium, that’s 145 degrees F to 160 degrees F. Turn the meat routinely to ensure even browning.
  • For a one inch filet, cook for ten to thirteen minutes for medium.
  • Remove the fillet mignon and transfer it to a platter. Cover with a foil and leave to sit for five minutes before serving.

How to Cook Filet Mignon in the Broiler?

  1. If you are cooking cuts less than one and a half inches thick, place the rack so the steak can sit three to four inches from the heat.
  2. If the cut is one and a half inches thick, place the broiler in a way that the steak will be four to five inches from the heat.
  3. After that, preheat the broiler for five to ten minutes and place the fillet mignon on the unheated rack of the broiler pan.
  4. Follow the timing to broil a fillet mignon.
  5. For a one inch cut, broil for twelve to fourteen minutes at 145 degrees F for medium-rare. Or medium cooked at 160 degrees F for 15 to 18 minutes.
  6. For a one and a half cut fillet mignon, broil 18 to 21 minutes for medium-rare at 145°F. Or medium cook at 160 degrees F for 22 to 27 minutes.
  7. When ready, remove and transfer to a platter. Cover with foil and allow to stand for five minutes before serving.

Tips for Selecting a Great Steak

  • The meat should have good color and appear moist but not wet.
  • Any cut edges should be even, not ragged.
  • If prepackaged, avoid meat with tears in the packaging or liquid at the tray’s bottom. The meat should feel firm and cold to the touch.
  • Count on serving 3 to 4 ounces of meat per person.

Wrap Up!

The time it takes to cook fillet mignon depends on the thickness of the meat and the cooking pattern. For a 1-inch cut, grill for 10 to 12 minutes for medium-rare (145°F) or 12 to 15 minutes for medium (160°F).
